当ミュージアムの館長である私　坂田一彦は３０有余年前にこの斑尾高原の土地を購入、将来的にウインタースポーツの活動の拠点として活用を考えておりました。
　一方、海外勤務の傍らに世界の音楽に接する機会を多く得、同じく３０有余年以前に出張先の南米でハープ（スペイン語でアルパ）に出逢い、その玉を転がすような美しい音色にすっかり魅了され爾来、本業の傍ら、世界各地で、このハープと言う有史以来存在する類稀なる音色の楽器の発展の歴史や普及ルートの探求、更には楽器そのものの収集に傾注してきました。

　時も経ち、この四季の美しい斑尾高原に１９９９年に待望の山荘を建設しました。その折、即ち今からですと６年余前から、 斑尾高原のこの地にハープミュージアムを開設するアイデアが具体的に固まり、そしてそのためのプロジェクトを立ち上げ、準備を進めて参りました。その一環として、３年前にハープを陳列展示するためのスペースも増築しました。 　そして晴れて昨年５月の正式開館として結実しました。

　このハープと言う楽器は歴史上存在する最も古い楽器の一つで、又その時代を超えた地理的な広がりも世界的です。この日本にも正倉院にハープが伝えられています。

　世界に音楽関係や楽器のミュージアム多しと言えどもハープのこの広がりを全世界的に網羅したミュージアムは私の知る限りでは存在しておりません。
　欧州にも優れたコレクションが幾つかありますが、アフリカ関係があっても、南米関係がなかったり、不足したりしています。
　私の意図するところは、出来る限り全世界を網羅したこのハープの伝播、楽器の分布、各地の民族音楽の中でのハープの秀でた音楽性そのものを明らかにし、このハープという楽器の持つ独特の強烈な存在感に多くの方々の共感を得、ハープと言う楽器そのものの将来にわたる更なる発展を願うものです。

　その意味で、私設ではありますが、このミュージアムは世界で初めて、従いまして当然日本でも初めて、地球的な広がり含めたハープの全容を捉えた稀有なミュージアムであると自負しております。既にかなりの資料は手元にありますが、探求活動に終わりはなく、未収集の資料、ハープもまだ多々あるでしょう。それは今後の継続的活動を通じて追い追い充実させることに致します。ご関心の皆様のご支援も大いに励みとなります。

　この雪と自然のロマンあふれる斑尾高原において小さいながらも、芸術文化の振興のための一助となる活動を起こし、四季の自然の中での、スポーツや観光それにもろもろの社会文化活動と相まって地域活性化にも貢献できれば望外の幸せであります。又 斑尾高原の新名所の一つになればと願っています。

This museum was found in 2005 as the premier museum specialized in harps of the world.
After long business service in various countries , the owner has come to know the verv long and wide-spread history of the musical instrument "HARP" and naturally was fascinated by its beautiful sound.
During his service in various countries for over 23 years, besides his main task on business, the owner continuously accumulated his knowledge about harps and the profound study made him finally open the museum in Japan with harps collected from all over the world together with all very precious & historical documents.
This museum is located at Madarao Kogen Highlands, Northern Nagano, Japan. Madarao is verv well known for its winter sports with its powder snow, so naturally we have a heavy snow fall every winter.
We can enjoy beautiful 4 seasons throughout the year here in Madarao. The unique existence of this museum calls highest attention publicly world wide and the harmonization between harp music and the Madarao's beautiful nature landscapes through all seasons is making a verv specific atmosphere, which a lot of harp lovers come to appreciate.
The owner wishes from the bottom of his heart the great development and the expansion of harp lovers in the world so that every one of us enjoys the most beautiful sound of music on the earth. That is HARP. The museum owner is named Mr. Kazuhiko SAKATA who proudly undersigns herewith.
